Sometimes it seems as if the world gone crazy? Disasters, Scandals, Tragedy, Famines, Pestilence, Epidemics, Terrorism, Plagues. It seems like a prophecy out of the book of Revelations. And this was just last week. Day after day, week after week, month after month, it’s exhausting. It wears you down. If you’re alive today more than likely you’re experiencing a sense of chaos and feeling, frustrated, angry, overwhelmed and exhausted.

Right now, a lot of people seem to be suffering from something called compassion fatigue,

Wikipedia defines it as  “a condition characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time….”

“Sufferers can exhibit several symptoms including hopelessness, a decrease in the experiences of pleasure, constant stress and anxiety, sleeplessness or nightmares, and a pervasive negative attitude. This can have detrimental effects on individuals, both professionally and personally, including a decrease in productivity, the inability to focus, and the development of … feelings of incompetence and self-doubt…The media has caused widespread compassion fatigue in society by saturating newspapers and news shows with often decontextualized images and stories of tragedy and suffering. This has caused the public to become cynical, or become resistant to helping people who are suffering.”

People feel something is wrong but that they can’t do anything about it, so they ignore it, they complain, become angry. People stop being civil, kind, caring.  Everyone seems to be screaming at each other. How can we get it to stop?

The problem is it probably won’t stop. Technology has sped the world up to an unimaginable pace. I’ve heard the generation after the Millennials or Generation Z will be comfortable with this level of chaos. But for right now many of us are pulling our hair out trying to find time, and space for ourselves in the midst of it. We have lost our peace, we have lost our joy. What can we do? My suggestion is to stop, just stop. Stop and breathe.

My favorite time of the day is between 4 and 5 AM. I often wake up in the darkness and just listen…to nothing. It is eerily quiet at that time of the morning. There are no demands, no pressures, no distractions, no disasters, no chaos, it is peaceful.  If I listen, all I can really hear is my breath and the breath of my husband.  The world seems at peace.
I believe that joy is always close at hand we just have to stop and look for it.

Many people want to go back to a simpler, calmer time. They wish life was more predictable, but that doesn’t seem possible.

Finding joy is about accepting the chaos, and looking for the opportunities within it.
